How to Find Your Tribe as an Expat: Building Meaningful Connections in a New City
Finding your tribe is a journey—it doesn’t happen overnight, but one day, you’ll realize you’ve built meaningful connections. Whether big or small, your tribe is about quality, not quantity.
Moving to a new city can be daunting and lonely, but I’ve been there—experiencing both success and setbacks in making new friends. Your new tribe won’t replace your old one; it will enrich your experience in your new home. So, how do you start? One step at a time.
Top Tips for Finding Your Tribe as an Expat
1. Take Action.
As an introvert, I found it hard to talk to strangers—but I pushed past the fear, and it paid off.
2. Leverage Social Media & Online Groups.
Search for local Facebook groups (e.g., "English Speakers in [Your City]") and introduce yourself—I met four amazing women this way.
InterNations is great for expats—attend meetups in places you enjoy.
Meetup.com offers groups based on shared interests (yoga, hiking, running, etc.).
3. Join a Hobby or Sports Group.
Search Instagram, Facebook, or local websites for clubs that interest you. Yes, putting yourself out there is hard—but staying lonely is harder.
4. Start Conversations.
If you notice someone in a similar situation—struggling to pick ripe avocados or soothing a crying child—say something! The worst that can happen? A brief, awkward moment. The best? A new connection.
5. Seek Support When Needed.
Loneliness can be tough. If you’re struggling, external support can make all the difference. As an Expat Coach, I offer a free first session to help guide you through this transition.
Finding your tribe is one of the most rewarding parts of expat life. So take that first step—you never know where it might lead.
